In online business, Conversion is King. If you've been in the industry for any amount of time, you've undoubtedly heard this term... but it's recently come to my attention that some people might not fully grasp what a conversion actually is.
(And no, I don't mean in the religious sense!)
Well, I'm here to set the record straight.
So let's dive into what's behind this trendy, jargon-y word into its true meaning. What actually is a "conversion" and what do we mean when we use this term?
Q: Is there a difference between a funnel and a conversion? A: YES! A conversion happens at the end of the funnel process. I like to think of a funnel as a multi-step sales journey. Basically, it's the process through which your customers find you, and then the path you lead them down that eventually results in them making the decision to buy or book you.
Q: So, a "conversion" is essentially a sale, right? A: Yes and no. It absolutely can be! Conversion is a bit of a broad term which we can boil down to this: when your visitors are taking whatever action you're prompting them to do at the end of your funnel - whether that's subscribing to your mailing list, buying a product you're selling, getting on the phone with you, or sending you a message. You have to have a clear end-goal in mind for any given sales funnel before you can land a conversion.
Q: How does my call to action factor into my conversion rates, then? A: Many factors go into what makes a good CTA. The gist of the matter is, though, that a strong call to action leads to higher conversion rates.
Q: What makes a strong CTA? A: In a word: ACTION! You want to prompt your visitors to take action now, and make the decision for them. If you leave your CTA's open ended - eg. "Contact me if you'd like to chat" - then more often than not, they will take the easier option (not to chat). However, if you make it sound like they'd be missing out if they didn't book that call, they're more likely to convert (eg. "Get your FREE call").
CTA's are a whole other subject we can get into next time, though!
